Mary Stewart 17th September 1916 – 9th May 2014

Farewell to Mary Stewart, novelist extraordinaire and exponent of midcentury Gothic whose poetic evocations of landscape and character filled my mind for so many years. Only one of her books was adapted for the big screen and while Disney’s interpretation of The Moon-Spinners (1964) might have watered down some aspects of the content, it boasted beautiful location shooting and a marvellous cast, including Pola Negri in her last role, opposite Hayley Mills and a rather wonderful big cat.
