Penny Serenade (1941)

Cary Grant and Irene Dunne are the screen’s greatest screwball couple, pace The Awful Truth and My Favorite Wife. What a pair of films! And yet in this soap opera their spikiness and physicality plays perfectly too. They lose one child in utero during an earthquake in Tokyo, and eventually lose their hard-won adopted daughter from an unexpected illness and all of this takes place while they struggle to make a living publishing a smalltown California newspaper. Really so unexpected in many ways with joy and sadness and ups and downs with great sideshows from Edgar Buchanan and Beulah Bondi. George Stevens was a hell of a director.
