Like the unwanted lovechild of David Lynch and Terence Malick with a hefty piece of Nicolas Winding Refn thrown in as an afterthought, this story of a single mom falling foul of the financial knot of her mortgage provider and her son’s obsession with an underwater flood town is quite simply weird. Not even in a good way. But it looks nice. Ryan Gosling’s shooting choices are not awful but the story itself of abandonment is not convincing. Good cast though.
