Adam’s Rib (1949)

Classic Hollywood battle of the sexes comedy, starring one of cinema’s great partnerships, Tracy and Hepburn, and written by another, Gordon and Kanin and directed by the legendary woman’s director George Cukor. They are married lawyers who find themselves on opposite sides of an attempted murder case caused by adultery, involving Tom Ewell and Judy Holliday,who would star in Kanin’s Born Yesterday for Cukor a year or so later. Great fun with jabs about gender differences that are timeless. Kanin would come to describe Tracy and Hepburn as the ‘perfect pair’ and this illustrates why.
