The Brother from Another Planet (1984)

The Brother from Another Planet poster.jpg

The extravagantly talented writer John Sayles has had a distinguished career directing too and this strange film hovers between sci fi and silent – a mute alien in the form of a black man arrives on earth where he is chased by bounty hunters from space. More than a relic of its era, it really serves as an allegory for immigration (kind of like Finian’s Rainbow. No, really.) Joe Morton is terrific in the title role while Sayles himself and regular cast member David Strathairn are the original Men in Black, blessed with that deathless line, Badges! What badges?!  We don’t need to show you badges! in tribute to that classic Bogey/Huston outing, Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Bliss.
