The Split (1968)

The Split lobby card.jpg

A caper/heist movie that’s principally of interest for its cast, led by NFL great Jim Brown, and a chance to see Los Angeles in the late 60s when the Sixties dream was beginning to fall apart at the seams. The robbery at the Los Angeles Coliseum during a playoff is the central plotline from the Donald E. Westlake (Richard Stark) novel that served as the source and the gang that fall out about the take includes Diahann Carroll, Ernest Borgnine and Julie Harris. Also in on the plan are Warren Oates, Jack Klugman and Donald Sutherland. Gene Hackman is the detective on their trail who winds up striking a deal with Brown … or does he? Directed by Gordon Flemyng, a Scotsman who had made his mark in Britain with Doctor Who films and following a stretch with features returned to TV.
