Post-Friends Courteney Cox had a magnificent zeitgeisty TV drama about a National Enquirer-type publication called Dirt. Someone, somewhere, pulled the plug and eventually after a handful of years doing another show called Cougar Town she’s made her film directing debut (okay it was 2 years ago, but it’s only just been on Sky Movies). It’s the story of a guy who is suicidally depressed and goes back to his hometown to get revenge on everyone who’s fucked him over since he was a kid. Needless to say, nothing and nobody is quite what they were 3o years before and things turn out … unexpectedly. This is tonally well handled, given that comedy drama is a tough choice. Seann William Scott is good in the lead while some funny supporting turns and some ribald dialogue – and action! – really surprises. Not going to set the world alight but a very competent entertainment with some life lessons tucked in.
