Ruthless (2023)

Do you have to be a sexist pig like all of them? Widower and high school wrestling coach Harry (Dermot Mulroney) is devastated when his daughter is murdered by her boyfriend and is persuaded by LAPD cop Tom (Mauricio Mendoza) to stay cool in his grief at the trial. He becomes concerned about one of his students, a young girl named Catia (Melissa Diaz) who is being abused at home. Harry takes it upon himself to protect Catia and provide her with a safe haven but his actions soon attract the attention of a dangerous human trafficking ring. When Catia is kidnapped by the traffickers, Harry embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue her from an ‘auction’ in Las Vegas and comes up against Dale (Jeff Fahey) who runs the show in the course of which he discovers the real reason behind his daughter’s murder … This fucking guy! A straightforward genre workout that comes off as exploitation, this has Mulroney as the gruff father who overcomes his grief by sating it through violence: breaking arms is his speciality. Maybe don’t go in all confrontational right off. With the virtue of a conscience troubling him as a high school coach who hasn’t gone all out for smart-mouthed Catia who’s suffering the attentions of her mother’s boyfriend, he takes on a gang led by a straight to action veteran Fahey, giving good villain. They sell the girls off to the highest bidder. There are no surprises in this grimly efficient and unadorned thriller but it fills the vigilante-shaped hole in your life. Mulroney did all his own fighting, BTW. Directed by Art Camancho who co-wrote the screenplay with James Dean Simington and Javier Reyna & Koji Steven Sakai. Can I interest you in a rape whistle?
