Anvil: The Story of Anvil (2008)

The film begins with the great and the good of metal (Metallica, Guns ‘n’ Roses) lining up to say how much the Canadian band nobody remembers influenced their every move. So why didn’t they make it? Sacha Gervasi’s documentary about the band that arguably made metal mainstream in the 1980s is desperately funny, sad, moving and even tragic as it traces the mistakes, misfortunes and mismanagement of a European ‘comeback’ tour by a fan who doesn’t get them paid but runs off with one of them, leaving the original pairing of Robb and Lipps to record their 13th album without him. It’s about the also-rans, the guys who weren’t pretty but were more talented than their imitators but never got the breaks. Ain’t that the truth. Fabulous but sad.
