The Umbrellas of Cherbourg Won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 1964

Jacques Demy’s glorious opera for film with music composed by Michel Legrand won the Palme d’Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival. It introduced Catherine Deneuve to the world and remains one of the greatest musicals ever made, a beautiful sung-through tragic story that poignantly explores young love, war and compromise.
